This 24-hour Maine DHHS approved course follows the Maine CRMA curriculum and is for unlicensed support staff certification to give non-injectable medications to residents (5 or fewer) in the Level 3 residential group home setting. Students must be able to speak, read and write in English, follow detailed directions and effectively communicate with the care team in order to manage and administer medications in an accurate and competent manner.

See the course requirements and  details from the Maine CRMA curriculum Introduction:

https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/sites/maine.gov.dhhs/files/documents/dlc/crma_introduction.pdf

This course reviews the Maine CRMA curriculum: Introduction, Unit 1, and Unit 2

Successfully complete the course in a 3-step process:

  1. 3-day class on Tu/Wed/Th,  9am-3:30pm
  2. “Med Pass” at the program using the CRMA  skills checklist, completed and emailed to us in PDF format
  3. Verify your new CRMA certificate is active on the “CRMA search” after submitting your skills checklist

CRMA/Certified Residential Medication Aide 24 hour certificate- an unlicensed support staff role to give non-injectable medications to clients in a Level 3 (5 or fewer residents per program) group home setting.

Non-injectable medications include: pills/tablets/capsules, liquids, inhalers (through nose or mouth), nasal spray, eye drops, ear drops, topical creams/ointments/lotions, vaginal/ rectal creams or suppositories.

  • uncheckedAll CRMA certificates expire every 2 years- renew with the 8-hour Recertification course
  • uncheckedInsulin or epi pen injections require additional RN training
  • uncheckedA CRMA can only accept written/faxed orders, no telephone/verbal orders
  • uncheckedYour certificate belongs to you, not the employer at the time of this course
  • uncheckedReport concerns of  resident/client abuse or neglect to your supervisor/DHHS
  • uncheckedAlways wash your hands before handling meds/working with clients

The course is completed in a 3-step process:

1. A live 3-day instruction on a Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday, 9am-3:30pm, with a full class of 12 students, at the employer office location in the Southern Maine; travel expenses are added for training outside the Cumberland county area.

2. After successfully completing the 3-day class, a hands-on "med pass" demonstration is required  in the workplace to administer the resident’s actual meds, under the supervision of a CRMA who has been certified for a full year. It should be  a meaningful learning experience to prepare the student to work independently and administer meds correctly. The student should know the meds they will be giving ahead of time, including the classification, reason for use of each med and potential side effects to watch for.

The "CRMA skills checklist”*** must be utilized with the med pass to give 3-4 meds to one or more residents and be completed with a printed name, signature,  date and last 4 digits of the social security #of both the student and CRMA preceptor. Email a PDF copy of the completed skills checklist, along with a separate copy of the CRMA preceptor's certificate with the last 4 digits of their social security #, to info@prohealthtrain.com.

***A copy of the skills checklist can be found near the bottom of our website page and from the Maine CRMA curriculum Introduction, pg. 18.

After we receive the completed skills checklist and CRMA preceptor’s certificate/ last 4 SS#, it can generally take 3-5 business days for the student’s CRMA certificate to be processed by the State and appear on the Maine CRMA search portal. It is the employer's responsibility to email us if you do not get confirmation within 3 business days of emailing us the required documents and information.

3. After all of the above is complete, it is the student's is responsibility to verify their new CRMA certificate on the Maine CRMA portal from our website “certificate search” button before working as a CRMA.
